Episode 16: Visual Style

Introduction

We covered a ton of content around different types of design theories, like anything about the basics such as; Typography, Colour, Forms, Grids, Wireframes, User Flow and other basic stuff.

Now, it's time to start building up our fidelity. This is a big topic in the design realm. I would say, in terms of like where do we start our design from and how do we end up somewhere?

Design Fidelity is just something hard, there is no right answer to how to start but I think we should always start quickly. Like starting with our sketches and then building our way up over time.

Nothing is ever designed and perfected in the same step because going to those final beautiful designs takes a lot of testing and refinement, which is why we used those sketches, wireframes and prototypes we created.

You want to continuously build upon your learnings instead of jumping right into beautiful designs. This is why this course was structured from sketching and gradually building our way up into different topics around style.

It's a great segway into thinking about building, measuring and learning, which is something we should always try to incorporate in our design process. Note: It is recommended to read the book "Lean Startup", It's an amazing book and it teaches about this build, measure and learn cycle.

In essence, what you want to do is to seek your feedback early and then go on to learn and apply. This is how you build an understanding of the product you're building. But this is also, how you build and reach that level and type of fidelity that resonates with your users.

So, the reason we seek feedback is to use those learnings to inform and improve our designs. Waiting too late to test or find that feedback is often too late to act on that feedback and it could be way too costly.

It is advisable to use those low-fidelity wireframes to start getting feedback early and you can continue to improve on your product as you move on.

You should not be making a large decision without proper feedback. Don't just jump into high-fidelity designs right off the bat. That is a no-no.

I can't stop over-emphasizing to start with your sketches, then gradually build your way up, because if you start with beautiful designs without figuring out if certain things do not work or do work, then you're setting yourself up for a big surprise later on.

If you deliver the product to users and you find out maybe users are not interacting or getting too deep into the funnel of like checking out or even using your application. So, remember to always test your wireframes to get feedback early and learn from it and then jump into designs and visual exploration, later on, to gradually build up that fidelity.

The video below shows how I iterated my Product from one of my previous episodes on Wireframes (Low-Fidelity Design) to Visual Style (High-Fidelity Design):
